SIERRA CLUB ENDORSES BRIAN SCHWALB FOR REELECTION AS ATTORNEY GENERAL
Schwalb’s proven track record for enforcing environmental laws, keeping District residents safe, and holding polluters accountable clinches another key endorsement
Washington, DC – The Sierra Club today announced its endorsement of Brian Schwalb for a second term as Attorney General of the District of Columbia. Sierra Club’s DC Chapter advocates for the preservation of nearby nature, promotion of good environmental policy, and sustainable and healthy communities in the District.
Sierra Club is Schwalb’s ninth endorsement and reflects an unwavering commitment to protecting the District’s air, land and water through vigorous enforcement of federal and local environmental laws. As Attorney General, Schwalb has challenged unlawful rollbacks of environmental protections and unfounded claims for federal preemption. He has also sued to hold polluters accountable, including the federal government for its historic contamination of the Anacostia River.
“Brian Schwalb has built a strong record holding polluters accountable,” said Susan Schorr, chair of the chapter’s Zero Waste Committee. “He’s taken legal action against chemical companies, DC’s electric utility, the federal government, and other polluters who contaminated the Anacostia River and fouled our air, water, and neighborhoods. In his next term, we look forward to working with Attorney General Schwalb to ensure that all DC restaurants comply with the utensils-on-request law for take-out and delivery food to cut down on plastic pollution.”
“One of my highest priorities as the District of Columbia’s independent, elected Attorney General is safeguarding the District’s land, air, and waterways. Every resident and visitor in the District deserves to have clean air, safe and reliable water, and neighborhoods free from harmful pollution. These are not luxuries; they are essential public health protections. Environmental conditions can determine whether a child develops asthma, whether older residents can safely withstand extreme heat, and whether communities east of the Anacostia River face disproportionate environmental burdens. Protecting the environment is, at its core, about protecting people and advancing the public interest—central responsibilities of the Office of the Attorney General and the mission that guides my work,” said Schwalb.
The following organizations have also endorsed Schwalb for a second term as DC Attorney General:
- Baltimore-D.C. Metro Building Trades Council
- International Association of Firefighters Local 36
- International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 26
- Ironworkers Local 5
- Mid-Atlantic Pipe Trades Association
- United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry
- United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America
